StockGraphy Inc. (Tokyo, Japan; Headquarters; CEO: Hideyuki Sakaguchi) has joined forces with The Bagan House Lacquerware enterprise (Mandalay Region, Myanmar; CEO: Ma Maw), a renowned traditional workshop, to launch a project evaluating the use of 3D digital archiving for Bagan lacquerware. This initiative seeks to investigate the technical challenges and potential applications of digitally archiving Bagan lacquerware while enhancing the understanding of digital technology among Myanmar’s cultural heritage professionals—laying the foundation for future endeavors.
Bagan lacquerware is a traditional craft imbued with rich cultural heritage and exceptional artisanal skill, and its preservation and transmission continually call for more effective approaches. Through the experimental creation of 3D digital archival data for Bagan lacquerware, this project aims to explore the potential of digital preservation and new methods of cultural communication, while deepening local cultural heritage stakeholders’ understanding of digital technology.
Myanmar (Burma) lacquerware boasts a history spanning more than 500 years, with its traditions having been passed down since the 14th century. In particular, lacquerware from the Bagan region is renowned for its unique needle decoration technique, which yields delicate and highly creative designs. The manufacturing process—meticulously selecting traditional natural lacquer and locally sourced materials under stringent quality control—has earned this craft high praise both domestically and internationally for its exceptional artistry and technical excellence.
The Bagan House Lacquerware enterprise was founded in 1930 under the name “Saya Goon” by the great-grandfather of its current owner. Over the past 90 years, skilled artisans have painstakingly handcrafted pieces that have become prized possessions in esteemed collections, including the British Museum and those of renowned collectors. Now led by fourth-generation CEO Ma Maw, the company continues to honor its ancestral traditions while embracing contemporary design sensibilities in the production of lacquerware and furniture—effectively blending heritage with innovation.。
